Description

Franklin Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed as assistant secretary of the Navy. One page of a bifolium, 7" x 9.25", Washington, May 25, 1914, on letterhead reading, "The Assistant Secretary of the Navy / Washington" to Louis M. Antisdale of the Rochester [New York] Herald concerning up-state New York politics. The future president conveys that he wants to "work with all of you" regarding Democratic Party appointments. The letter is lightly age-toned and has one smoothed fold. Roosevelt's large, bold signature is in blue ink. In part:

"Your letter about the Oneida County situation came just as I was going to sit down to write you about it and find out what your judgment was. When I was in Albany the Beardsley crowd . . . were on pretty friendly terms with 14th Street and Harvey Ferris, their Senator, was an able ally from up-state who stood very close to C. F. M. himself. About a year ago Judge O'Connor, Dempsey and others began coming down here about various post offices. The only advice I have given them was that if the nominations in the country towns of Oneida County were thoroughly unsatisfactory to the Democrats of the locality they could accomplish something by getting petitions signed by the majority of the enrolled Democrats in favor as some other candidate against whom there was no objection. . . . All I have done has been to hold up the matter in the past. I have not, however, held up the confirmation of any of the names sent in and will speak to Mr. Roper about it. Naturally I want to work with all of you and I hope the situation there will clear itself up."
