Franklin D. Roosevelt, one page, quarto, The White House Washington letterhead , February 4, 1942, in the first months after America's entry into World War II, and on the occasion of FDR's sixtieth birthday, to the Honorable Stewart McDonald, FDR's Federal Housing Administrator, with original transmittal envelope. Mr. McDonald's original appointment to this New Deal post, co-signed by Secretary of State Cordell Hull on January 28, 1936, as well as other correspondences are also part of this FDR Collection. FDR writes: "Dear Stewart:/ What more could I desire on my birthday than good wishes from good friends. They bring warmth and strength, particularly in times such as these./ My thanks for all you say in your message!/ Very sincerely yours,/ FDR." Stewart McDonald was FDR's Federal Housing Administrator. FDR signed the act creating the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) on June 27,1934. FHA guaranteed home mortgage loans made by savings and loan institutions. It had a major impact on urban home ownership, which expanded from forty six percent in 1930 to sixty five percent in 1980. A truly fabulous and historic letter, sent by FDR to his Federal Housing Administrator in acknowledging his thanks and friendship during "times such as these," meaning America's entry into World War II.
