    Franklin Pierce Signed Presentation Copy of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Life of Franklin Pierce. Boston: Ticknor, Reed, and Fields, 1852. Inscribed on the first flyleaf (following four pages of advertisements), in full: "Mrs. James M. Tarlton / With the respects of / [signed] Frank Pierce / Concord N.H. / October 16, 1852." 16mo, 144 pages. Brown cloth over boards with blind stamped border and floral decoration and titles in gilt on the spine. Clear dust jacket. Bumped corners; light shelfwear.

    Pierce first met author Nathaniel Hawthorne at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in the fall of 1820. Both men had joined a literary group, the Athenian Society, and became close friends.
