Franklin Pierce Signature "Frank. Pierce" 6" x 1.75", Hillsboro, New Hampshire, nd. Pierce was the last Whig to occupy the White House. The Kansas-Nebraska Act was the most controversial event of his presidency; it re-opened the question of slavery in the West. Pierce himself was a "doughface", a Northerner with Southern sympathies. His opponents saw it as a triumph for slavery and it led to the formation of the Republican Party. Due to Pierce's inability to prevent the Civil War, many have placed him among the ranks of the "Worst Presidents". Sadly, Pierce had a lifelong struggle with alcohol, and several bad decisions during his administration led to public dissatisfaction, and his own party abandoned him just after one term. After this he declared support for the Confederacy, an act that further damaged his reputation. However, most modern scholars believe that Pierce was simply a man who was not able to cope with the changing climate of his country, and just fell into plain old bad luck. His handsome face and timid nature made him a popular man regardless of his political shortcoming. Signatures of Pierce are deceptively uncommon, and one displayed as nicely as this one are great find. Matted alongside a handsome color engraving of Pierce, and a metal plaque bearing his name, birth and death dates, as well as the years of his term as 14th President of the United States. Framed to an overall size of 20.5" x 17.5", in a nice gilt frame. An excellent piece for display; the signature is bold and dark and shows little to no wear.
