Description

Franklin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed "Franklin Pierce". Two pages, 5" x 7.75" (sight), Andover, Massachusetts; September 21, 1859. Addressed to Hon. Charles Brown in Philadelphia, Pierce's letter shares family travel plans, reading in full:

"My dear friend, I thank you heartily for your letter of cordial welcome on our return. We are passing a few months at this place with Mrs. Pierce's only sister. We shall remain here and in N.H. until the birds leave and then perhaps we shall go with them to a more genial climate. I do not think it would be safe for Mrs. P to encounter the extreme cold of a New England." The letter is in a double-sided frame, along with a lithograph of Pierce, measuring 17.5" x 15.25" overall.

Charles Brown had previously been a Congressman for Pennsylvania. Following his presidency, Franklin Pierce returned to be a trustee at Norwich University in Vermont. Pierce's wife, Jane, suffered from tuberculosis, and he was keen to keep her in moderate climates to aid her health. She passed away four years later in Andover in 1863.

Condition: Usual mail folds, with light foxing and the top and bottom margins. Boldly signed by Pierce on verso.
