Franklin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed "F. P." One page, 8" x 9.75", Hillsboro [New Hampshire], December 31, 1828. In this light-hearted letter, the twenty-four year-old future president writes from his home to David Davis Jr., a merchant in Concord, New Hampshire, about "essential paraphernalia" for an upcoming ball. In part as written:

"In looking over my wardrobe I find myself destitute of some of the essential paraphernalia of a Ball Room-such as suitable hose, gloves, vest & pumps-articles not to be procured here. The three former you probably have on hand. If you will take the trouble to obtain the latter I will say all the clever things imaginable to Miss Caroline (not for myself but for you) the very first time I see her."

In the postscript Pierce writes in part, "I do not wish you to send me the articles but merely have them in readiness at your store pumps which will fit you are just the thing. Please send the articles by T. Wilson Esq our Representative."

Still single at the time, Franklin Pierce may well have said "clever things" to "Miss Caroline," but he married Jane Appleton Pierce six years later. Toned paper with smoothed folds. Tears resulting from the original opening of the seal show some evidence of repairs.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
