Description

Franklin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed with Free Frank Signed. One page (of a bifolium) with integral address leaf with free frank signed by Pierce, 7.75" x 9.75", Concord, [New Hampshire]; September 7, 1838. Letter from Pierce, then serving in the U.S. Senate from New Hampshire to Jonathan Harvey (1780-1859), a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives. Pierce writes in part that he had " just written a letter to the...Post Master...recommending the appointment of u Mr. Seamans /u . I think you had better send on the testimonials of the Select Men & other individuals in New London as soon as practicable." Together with a secretarially signed land grant issued to Catherine Ryant, widow of Joseph Ryant. Partially printed vellum document, 16"x 9.75", Washington, [D.C.]; November 1, 1854.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds, with paper loss at the bottom right-hand corner of the first page and minor paper loss on the address leaf where the seal used to be; two ink smudges on the top left-hand corner of the letter; otherwise good. The land grant has usual folds with tape present along right-hand edge; otherwise good.
