    Description

Franklin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed as President to Jefferson Davis. Three pages of a bifolium, 4.5" x 7"; "Tuesday Mor[nin]g". Not dated, but likely written sometime during May 1855, to Secretary of War Jefferson Davis concerning a military commission for the son of a late friend: "I have just received the enclosed from the daughter of my late true & most valued friend the late Capt. Webber - I hope it may be justly deemed proper to appoint his son. It would seem that he prefers the commission of a 2nd Lieutenant, but that can be considered hereafter - I leave this matter however to yourself & Col. Craig - I will only say what Col. Cooper can confirm from his personal knowledge that there can be no doubt with regard to Chas. H. Webber's character and competency - I am really disturbed by the article which you sent me this morning. It would seem that wrong must have been done, if so, it must be un done - Yr friend Franklin Pierce."

In this letter, President Pierce asks Secretary of War Jefferson Davis to offer the son of John A. Webber, who died on May 8, 1855, a military commission. On May 29, 1855 Charles H. Webber was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the Artillery. Jefferson Davis served as Secretary of War under Franklin Pierce from March 7, 1853 to March 4, 1857.

An interesting letter in that it shows the informal process of granting military commissions at the time, as well as the close personal relationship between the president and his secretary of war.
The letter is accompanied by an engraving of Pierce and notes on the Webbers, father and son.

Condition: Scattered foxing and light soiling throughout; with flattened folds and creasing. The first and the last page of the bifolium have small pieces of tape on the top edges. Otherwise, the letter is in good condition. Together with an engraving of Pierce.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
