Franklin Pierce Autograph Letter Signed as President. One page, penned on recto only, 7.5" x 8", Washington, D.C., October 31, 1856. This short and hastily penned letter was written in the closing days of the Pierce administration. The letter is addressed to John Samuel Hill Fogg (1826-1893) of Boston. In part: "... I had occasion several months since to apply to the Department of the Interior for a copy of the work to which you refer, but could not obtain one." Pierce is probably referring to reports regarding actions taken by the Department of the Interior in dealing with the Indians. In 1884, nearly thirty years after receiving this letter from the president, Fogg wrote a treatise on Indian language; it is likely his inquiry to the president concerned the Department of Interior's work with the native population. Faint toning with large, bold script. Mounting traces on verso, at corners.
