Description
Franklin D. Roosevelt Typed Letters (4) Signed "Franklin D Roosevelt" as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. All one page, three measuring 7" x 9.25" and one 8" x 10.5", Washington, D.C.; dated from April 28-November 28, 1913. All of the letters are addressed to Hon. George E. Van Kennen and relate to Van Kennen's suggestions regarding appointments and other political matters. In the first letter, dated April 28, 1913, Roosevelt responds to Van Kennen's candidate for U.S. District Attorney for Northern New York and tries to remain professionally impartial, saying "As Assistant Secretary of the Navy you will, of course, understand that it is an exceedingly delicate matter for me to attempt to interfere in appointment to be made in another Department of the Government. If my advice in the matter should be asked, however, I will not fail to remember that in your judgement Mr. Lucey is the best man for the place."In the July 23, 1913 letter, Roosevelt mentions the President being "so busy with the Mexican situation and other complications in Congress that he can make appointments with no one except officials of the Government here." The situation he refers to was the Mexican Revolution and the overthrowing of Francisco I. Madero. Later on August 18, 1913, Roosevelt again replied to an appointment application on behalf of Lieut. Charles R. Clark that Van Kennen had made, writing that the spots had already been filled but that another chance would be available in six months. The final letter, dated November 28, 1913, answers Van Kennen's queries about collector and deputy appointments within New York. FDR held the position of Assistant Secretary of the Navy from 1913 to 1919. It was during this time that he gained experience in what would later be vital to his own presidency, such as labor concerns, government management in wartime, naval logistics, etc.
Condition: Usual mail folds, all signed boldly in blue ink. One letter has a small area of dampstaining at the top edge. One letter has some extra paper material adhered to the top left corner. The largest typed letter has two small holes from a removed staple and "8R" has been written in pencil at the top right corner.
