Franklin D. Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed "Franklin D Roosevelt". One page, 8"x 10.5", New York; October 11, 1918. In a letter addressed to Hon. George E. Van Kennen, Roosevelt mentions that he is recovering from a bout of influenza and pneumonia, but will be returning to Washington soon. Roosevelt had been sailing from Europe on the USS Leviathan when the ship was struck by the Spanish flu. Many on board died, and Roosevelt became very ill. Luckily, he had recovered by the time the ship reached port in New York. He finishes the letter by writing "It seems to me that we have an excellent chance of electing Al Smith." Alfred Smith was indeed elected to Governor of New York. Ironically, the two men would later become rivals when Smith chose to run for the 1932 Democratic presidential nomination. Smith was also extremely opposed to Roosevelt's New Deal.
Condition: Usual mail folds with very light foxing. Boldly signed in black ink. Overall very good.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
