Franklin D. Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed "Franklin D Roosevelt." One page, 7.25" x 8.5", Washington, D.C.; June 14, 1938. Addressed to Mr. Begni del Piatta, and typed on White House letterhead, Roosevelt addresses the Navy and Marine Memorial project. It reads, in full:

"Replying to your letter of June 10th, regarding the unfinished Navy and Marine Memorial, I wish to assure you of my continued interest in this project. As you are aware, the Bill has been favorably reported to the House from the Library Committee, but was objected to when presented for passage by unanimous consent. In view of the volume of important legislation before the Congress, which will probably soon adjourn, I feel that I have given all the support to this Bill which I can consistently offer, as pointed out to you in my letter of January 20th."

The Navy-Merchant Marine Memorial, which honors those who died at sea during the First World War, was sculpted by Ernesto Begni del Piatta and dedicated in October 1934. However, lack of funds meant that the statue had to rest atop a concrete plinth, rather than the designed wave-like base. Eventually, Congress gained approval for the funds in 1939, and the green granite steps around the memorial were installed. The letter is matted and framed with a lithograph of Roosevelt, measuring 19" x 15" overall.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with light toning around the margins. Some slight ink bleeding in Roosevelt's signature, but very clear and bold.
