Franklin D. Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed "Franklin D. Roosevelt". One page, 8.5" x 11", Warm Springs, Georgia; April 20, 1925. Typed on personalized letterhead and addressed to Miss Thelma Parkinson, Roosevelt shares his thoughts on the organization of Democratic leaders. It reads, in part:"There is no question that the rank and file of Democrats throughout the country wish the so-called leaders to get together and formulate some definite plan of practical organization. It is true that the organization should proceed from the bottom up, and not from the top down. Nevertheless, it must be conducted according to some well defined plan and with the confidence that it is extending to every part of the country. Some of these leaders are either selfish or timid, but I feel that the pressure of public opinion will in the end produce results."
At the time this was written, Roosevelt was recovering from his paralytic illness and was spending the majority of his time on his houseboat, the Larooco. Thelma Parkinson was a New Jersey delegate at the 1924 National Convention. From then on, she attended every Democratic National Convention through the 1960s. Parkinson was the first woman to be considered as a nomination to the U.S. Senate. She later became a DNC Committeewoman and seconded John Garner's nomination for VP under Roosevelt.
Condition: Usual mail folds, with light rust soiling at the top margin where a paperclip was removed. Boldly signed.
