Franklin D. Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed. One page, 6.5" x 8.75" (sight), on White House letterhead, "Aboard Presidential Special (the president's train)," October 2, 1937, to Harrison J. Conant, State Librarian of Vermont, where he expresses his reservation at the United States' policy of non-intervention with regard to the growing tension in Europe. He writes, in full:"I am grateful to you for your letter, and I fully agree with you in regard to the real perils of the international situation. I am disturbed by it and by its daily changing events. Soon I think the Nation will begin to appreciate the ultimate dangers of isolating ourselves completely from all joint efforts toward peace."
FDR, despite his adamant refusal to embroil the U. S. in another bloody war, was not an isolationist. He believed wholeheartedly in the economic benefits of working with other countries while still holding a belief that America's interest would, and should, come first. Beginning in the mid-1930s, Congress began passing a series of Neutrality Acts in an attempt to keep the U. S. out of another European war, which everyday seemed more and more likely. As dictators like Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini solidified their power, Roosevelt's views began to change. While he still preached neutrality, he cautioned the country not compromise national security in its persistent avoidance of conflict. It was not until the surprise attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor in 1941 that America threw herself head first into the Second World War, both in Asia and in Europe.
Also included is the letter's original transmittal envelope. Matted and framed with a photograph of the president in his car to an overall size of 23.5" x 24.5".
