    Description

F.D.R. writes a letter of recommendation for a scholarship for the grandson of a cousin

Franklin D. Roosevelt Typed Letter Signed with Related Letter. One page, 8.5" x 11". "The White House"; April 15, 1942. A letter of recommendation on an application for a scholarship at the University of Pennsylvania written on behalf of Roosevelt Lesure Clark, the grandson of a Roosevelt cousin. In part: "I see the boy occasionally and consider him good material for a college education, in view of the fact that he has undoubted talents in drawing and in mathematics, and for many years has wanted to specialize in engineering. His Mother has practically no money except the pay of his Stepfather, who is now an officer in the United States Army... A portion of his school tuition was paid by my Mother and I have given him some help in order to enable him to stay in school during his last year at Pomfret." Signed in full, "Franklin D. Roosevelt." Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope and a handwritten letter from Mrs. Thomas S. Gates stating that Clark had been accepted for the scholarship and "had completed two years before going into the service." From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: Roosevelt's letter of recommendation has hole at top, possibly from a filing staple. Stamped receipt on lower right, and gently toned. Transmittal envelope has been cleanly opened at top; accompanying letter is near fine.
