Franklin D. Roosevelt, one page, quarto, The White House Washington letterhead , June 7, 1939, to the Honorable John Knight, former Republican Majority Leader of the New York State Senate, with interesting personal content, including FDR mentioning Warm Springs and its effect on a patient with poliomyelitis, as well as reminiscence about "old times." FDR writes: "Dear John:/ It was good to see that line of yours enclosing that interesting letter from the young man who had been at Warm Springs. I am glad indeed that he is gaining so well./ I do hope to see you one of these days soon and to talk over old times./ Always sincerely,/ Franklin D. Roosevelt." By the time FDR wrote this letter John Knight was a United States District Court Judge for the Western District of New York in Buffalo, New York. As a State Senator when FDR was Governor of New York, John Knight served as the Republican Majority Leader of the New York Senate who was one of the main political opponents of FDR at the time, especially on the issue of FDR's innovative plan to open the Midwestern United States to the Atlantic Ocean and simultaneously harness hydro power from the Saint Lawrence River, a move detrimental to big business and therefore the Republican party. FDR's handwritten letter to Basil "Doc" O'Connor regarding this issue and Senator Knight, written in July, 1929, as well as FDR's invitation to Senator Knight to join him on an inspection tour of the proposed project, also in July, 1929, are also part of this FDR Collection.
