    Description

Inquiring about interest on deposits: "...I am enough of a Dutchman to suggest that I leave this amount intact"

Franklin D. Roosevelt: Typed Letter Signed as President with Holographic Correction.
-November 24, 1941. Washington, D.C. One page. 7" x 9". White House letterhead docketed by recipient.
-To: Arthur J. Morris, Fulton Trust Co., New York City.
    -Fold, light soiling. Very good.

FDR writes, "Thanks for the pass-book. I am returning the signature cards herewith. I think it enough for the Trust Company to send statements of my account once every three months./ By the way, do you good people give interest on six month's time deposits? If so, I am enough of a Dutchman to suggest that I leave this amount intact [FDR joins "in" and "tact" into one word, initially typed as two separate words, in his own hand] on that basis and get a few additional dollars. I imagine the estate taxes will not be paid for about that length of time."

A very interesting letter from FDR on The White House Washington letterhead, dated November 24, 1941 within two weeks of Pearl Harbor, containing very interesting content regarding FDR's personal finances and tax situation, with a typographical correction in FDR's own hand. The White House letter is docketed to A.J.M. as received November 25, 1941. The letter is written to Arthur J. Morris, Esq. FDR writes: "Dear Mr. Morris:/ Thanks for the pass-book. I imagine the estate taxes will not be paid for about that length of time./ Very sincerely,/ Franklin D. Roosevelt." Interestingly, FDR mentions his Dutch heritage, using it to his advantage in terms of buttressing his financial acumen to Mr. Morris. In actuality, historic analyses of FDR's blood lines indicated that he was at most approximately 3 percent of Dutch ancestry! Arthur J. Morris was the President of Fulton Trust Company.  The FDR Library has several files of family and personal bank statements and cancelled checks from Fulton Trust Company going back to 1919. A very interesting and personal letter by the "Dutchman" FDR regarding his financial and tax situation, including FDR's attempts to maximize his savings and investments with one of his major investment advisors.
