Franklin D. Roosevelt. Typed Letter Signed. One page (quarto), The White House, Washington, November 8, 1940, to Senator George Radcliffe of Maryland. FDR writes: "Dear George,/ My hearty thanks to you, Miss Williams, and Mr. Young for your cordial message. I have also been deeply interested in noting your telegram of the seventh in which you tell of the fine work done by Chairman Truman Cash and his associates. This is indeed gratifying and sincerely appreciated./ May I also congratulate you upon your  to the Senate!/ Very sincerely yours,/ Franklin D. Roosevelt." The Chairman Truman Cash to whom FDR refers was the chair of the Maryland State Democratic committee in 1940. George Lovic Pierce Radcliffe (1877-1974) was a Senator from Maryland, born on a farm at Lloyds, near Cambridge, Dorchester County, Maryland on August 22, 1877. Radcliffe attended both public and private schools, and graduated from Cambridge (Maryland) Seminary in 1893, from Johns Hopkins University in 1897, from the graduate school of Johns Hopkins in 1900, and from the law department of the University of Maryland in Baltimore in 1903. Radcliffe was a principal of the Cambridge Seminary in 1900 and 1901, teacher in the Baltimore City College in 1901 and 1902, and was admitted to the bar in 1903, commencing practice in Baltimore. Radcliffe was also interested in banking and farming, a member of the Liquor License Commission, Baltimore, 1916-1919, a member of the Maryland State Council of Defense during the Great War, secretary of state of Maryland in 1919 and 1920, regional adviser of the Public Works Administration for Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and the District of Columbia in 1933 and 1934, and elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1934, reelected in 1940 and served from January 3, 1935, to January 3, 1947. Radcliffe was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1946 and resumed banking and farming interests, was actively involved in civic life, and resided in Baltimore, Maryland, where he died July 29, 1974. FDR writes to Senator Radcliffe just three days after his history-making third election as President of the United States.
