Franklin D. Roosevelt: Signed 1933 Menu, as President-Elect. 9" x 12" menu & program, bound in cord, issued for a banquet and musical review presented at the "Annual Dinner/ Inner Circle/ Hotel Astor/ February Eighteenth/ 1933". FDR has signed beneath his cover picture. Other signatures include Al Smith, James Hagerty and Howard Keith. The musical numbers are inspired by movies of the period, such as Front Page, Rain and Street Scene. 4 pages plus covers. Some minor stains on cover, not affecting signatures. This lighthearted gathering took place a mere four days after Roosevelt escaped an assassin's bullet and Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was fatally wounded. The Inner Circle was an organization of political reporters and James Hagerty, a New York Times editor, was its president. These New York dinners were widely attended and gave New York politicos a chance to "let down their hair" as the reporters staged burlesque skits lampooning them. Symbolic of the fraternal mood is the presence of both FDR and Al Smith's signatures. The two had been bitter rivals just months before for the 1932 Democratic presidential nomination. An uneasy truce followed, but the more conservative Smith would break with his party, eventually supporting Landon and Willkie over FDR in 1936 and 1940. Great display presence on this wonderful pairing of these two titans of New York Democratic politics.
