FDR purchases a nautically-related book on a 3 x 6" book order form with some nine words written in his own hand for The Model Builder's Assistant, ordered from the Marine Research Society, 161 Essex Street, Salem, Massachusetts. The book order form reads: "Enclosed please find $5 [‘5' written in FDR's own hand] for which send me prepaid 1 [‘1' written in FDR's own hand] copies of Regular Edition [copies of Special Paper Edition crossed out by FDR] of The Ship Model Builder's Assistant. FDR then fills in his contact information in the form in his own hand: "Franklin D. Roosevelt/ Hyde Park/ Dutchess Co./ N.Y." FDR had a lifelong interest in collecting nautical books and paintings, reflecting his great interest in seafaring, the legacy of his Delano ancestors whose fortune was made in the seafaring trades of the Far East in China. A wonderful example of FDR making sure his library of nautical books was always current and first rate.
