Franklin D. Roosevelt: Annotated and Signed Grid Iron Speech as President. 7 1/4" x 8 1/2" typed speech heavily annotated by President Roosevelt. The speech was given at the Grid Iron Club on April 29, 1933 thanking the press for their support as FDR had just been inaugurated for his first term in March. Roosevelt starts off with "As I face this distinguished gathering of the real arbiters of our political destines, the men who elevate us to high places in the public eye, or confine us to the oblivion of a four line mention on the inside pages....". He continues to mention he is the newly elected President of the United States, and speaks of past Grid Iron speeches. He also writes "It Ain't Gonna Rain No More" but we Democrats with our greater wisdom are already beginning to buy umbrellas. That I consider a prophecy. If during the last few months we have been able to progress in our task of protecting our distressed population from the storm of disaster which overtook us". FDR is most certainly referring to the Great Depression and the policies he implemented to end it. Its an amazing speech with additions and deletions in FDR's hand.
