Eleanor Roosevelt Typed Letters (3) Signed and Earl Warren Typed Letter Signed with additional letters and retained carbons to and from newspaper publisher J. David Stern.

The lot includes two typed letters to Stern that are signed by Eleanor Roosevelt, dated January 10, 1956 and June 11, 1957, thanking him for his support for the National Committee Against Discrimination in Housing. Mrs. Roosevelt was very involved in Civil Rights and humanitarianism. During her husband's time in office, Eleanor fought for education, employment, and housing rights, stating that they were basic human rights.

A third letter from Roosevelt dated May 18, 1962, thanks Stern for a copy of his book, Memoirs of a Maverick Publisher. All of Roosevelt's letters measure approximately 5.5" x 7".

A letter from Earl Warren (one page on Supreme Court letterhead, 5.75" x 7.75", Washington, D.C; May 18, 1962) also thanks Stern for a copy of his book. The lot includes more than 50 additional letters and retained carbons. Many of the letters are thank you notes from those who Stern sent copies of his book, such as Lyndon B. Johnson (secretarial), Francis E. Walter, Lord Beaverbrook, Claude Pepper, and others.

    J. David Stern was publisher of the pro-New Deal Philadelphia Record. From 1933-1939, he also published the New York Post. Being a liberal and confidante of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Stern decided he would be the first American publisher to sign a contract with the American Newspaper Guild. Indeed, Stern was so eager to achieve this distinction that he directed one of his ace reporters to organize a local Guild. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.
