    Description

Dwight D. Eisenhower Typed Letter Signed "Dwight D. Eisenhower." One page, 6.5" x 9.25", Palm Desert, California; December 21, 1963. Typed on Eisenhower's personal letterhead and addressed to Edward Jablonski, regarding the Dresden bombing raid. The letter reads in full:

"The only thing I can recall about the Dresden bombing raid was that a long and searching discussion was made at my headquarters before approval was given. I cannot remember, however, what became the controlling reason. But we did not bomb any city merely to break down civilian morale; there had to be strong military reasons. Unfortunately, some of the people who might be able to help you on this point are already dead. Possibly one man of the following might be able to give you some added information: General Carl (Tooey) Spaatz in Washington, General H.R. Bull, who was my operations officer in SHAEF, General Kenneth Strong of British Intelligence Service, and General J.F.M. Whiteley of the British Army. I am sorry that I cannot personally be more helpful." The letter is matted and framed with a black and white portrait of Eisenhower to the overall size of 18.25" x 15".

The bombing of Dresden was a British and American operation conducted over the course of two days, from February 13-15, 1945. In a series of four raids, nearly 4,000 bombs were dropped on the city of Dresden, which was the capital of the German state of Saxony. Between 22,700 and 25,000 people were killed, and the incident was later criticized as having less strategic significance as was previously claimed.

Condition: Flattened mail folds, with light edge toning. Light foxing in places. Bold signature by Eisenhower.
