Dwight D. Eisenhower Typed Letter Signed. One page on letterhead imprinted with Eisenhower's initials and general's stars, 7" x 10.25", March 22, 1951. Eisenhower congratulates Norman Cousins for an article he had written about the global fight against Communism. In part: "While you did not discuss the particular need and functions of armed forces in the critical situation of today, you did state, far more clearly than I could, my own conception of the broad basis on which we must fight out the battle of freedom versus Communism in the world...I tried to express something of this idea in the final two pages of a book I wrote in 1947. I most earnestly hope that you will keep pounding away to present the picture to more and more people, everywhere."

Eisenhower is referencing his book Crusade in Europe, which he wrote while serving as Chief of Staff of the Army under President Truman. Eisenhower was likely in Europe when he wrote this letter. Eisenhower arrived in Paris in January 1951, to serve as Supreme Allied Commander of NATO's military forces, which had been established to ensure Europe's defenses against a Soviet attack.

Eisenhower would successfully run for president the following year. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

Condition: Letter has been mounted. Lightly toned throughout with darker toning at upper left corner. Usual mail folds are present.
