Description
Dwight D. Eisenhower Autograph Note Signed with Initials as President. One page on White House imprinted stationery, 5" x 8"; circa 1960. President Eisenhower writes a response to a typed memo sent to him concerning gifts he is to present to President Alessandri of Chile. The memo informs Eisenhower that, "President Alessandri gave you a vicuna pancho (or 'manta')-very beautiful but hardly useful, together with his photograph. You are giving him that antique map of the Western hemisphere that you saw, together with Polaroid camera. Also photograph in silver frame."At the bottom of the memo, President Eisenhower writes the following in ink: "Will you please have Embassy take presents to President today? What was date of map? DE / Also give pictures to Mrs. Moore for transmission to Mrs Vidale."
Undated, but it is likely that this document dates from 1960; President Eisenhower visited Chile from February 29 to March 2 of that year, where he met with Jorge Alessandri (1896-1986), who served as the 27th President of Chile from 1958 to 1960. The memo to Eisenhower (signed "a") was probably from Ann C. Whitman (1908-1986), Eisenhower's personal secretary throughout his eight years in office. The Mrs. Moore referred to by the president was probably First Lady Mamie Eisenhower's sister Mabel Frances Doud Gill Moore (1902-1988).
Condition: With flattened horizontal folds and two small mounting remnants on verso at top. Accompanied by a black and white Pach Bros. photo of Eisenhower.
