    Description

Dolley Madison Autograph Letter Signed and Free Franked Envelope Signed "Dolley P. Madison." One page document, measuring 7.6" x 9.7", dated June 22, 1840, from Montpelier, Vermont. The letter was written to a bank in Washington D.C., requesting that they renew her notes. On the verso of this letter, Mrs. Madison signs this letter as a free franked envelope and addresses it to the bank from which she is requesting services. From a rare first lady, who loved her country and her tobacco, two wonderful signatures in one lot! The letter and the envelope are in fine condition; usual folds are present; cancellation stamp on the verso; tears on left and right edges where the wax seal was broken; slight soiling around the edges. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
