    Chester Arthur Autograph Letter Signed "C.A. Arthur". Two pages of a bifolium, 6" X 8.75", New York; September 8, 1874. Addressed to Thomas L. James, Esq. (Postmaster), Arthur's letter puts forward a candidate for an appointment in James' department. At the time, Arthur was serving as Collector of the Port of New York, having been appointed by President Grant in 1871. The letter reads, in full:

    "My dear Postmaster. The bearer hereof, Mr. James Webb, is an applicant for appointment in your department. He is a resident of the 21st Assembly District, and is, I understand, a worthy and meritorious man and good Republican. Had I any small places at my disposal I should be pleased pleased [sic] to provide for him myself. As it is, I commend him to your good offices, and shall be personally much gratified and obliged if you can appoint him."

    Arthur served as Collector of the Custom House at New York from 1871 to 1875. He later served on the New York State Republican Executive Committee before becoming Vice President under James Garfield. After Garfield was killed, Arthur was sworn in as the 21st President of the United States.

    Condition: Flattened mail folds, with some light toning and soiling at the edges and folds. Pencil writing on verso. Else very good with a bold signature.
