Caroline Harrison Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages on White House letterhead, 4.25" x 6.25"; "Woodland Hotel / Auburndale, Mass."; September 30, 1891. The First Lady fills four pages of a bifolium addressed to Mrs. J.S. Clarkson, wife of President Harrison's first Postmaster General. Great content regarding living under the scrutiny of the press and the public. In part: "When I see what good times people can have, I wonder - why any one cares to be in political life where every action is watched & misrepresented & then - most unmercifully attacked. I have had a double dose this summer. As the President will be good & not do anything outrageous, the miserable press have to attack the wife, the children & even the poor little grandchildren... I don't know but it would be wise to 'fight the devil with fire'... You know it hurts us worse to have our children abused than ourselves & these attacks on him [Russell Harrison, her son] are so malicious that I do feel exceedingly hurt over them. It is cruel beyond description..." Signed "Caroline S. Harrison" cross-hatched across the first page of the letter.

A few months prior to the date of this letter, the then current Postmaster General John Wannamaker had presented the First Lady with a summer cottage at Point May. There was immediate public outcry, and although President Harrison subsequently paid Wannamaker $10,000 for the cottage in July 1891, the sting of the attacks was still felt by the First Lady as evidenced in this letter.

Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope addressed by Caroline Harrison. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.

Condition: The letter appears to be trimmed at sides and bottom; with mounting tabs at top and bottom of interior pages of bifolium, affecting a few words. The envelope has soiling, and a tiny bit of paper loss on the top left edge of the flap.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
