Calvin Coolidge Typed Letter Signed as president. One page of a bifolium, 7" x 9", Washington, D.C.; December 5, 1923. A letter on White House stationery to Senator Selden P. Spencer of Missouri on the topic of political appointments. In part: "A very great many appointments come over my desk from the Departments which, necessarily, I take on their recommendation, because I have entire confidence in their judgment. I am also entrusted with the duty of making a great many myself. It is my intention to consult the members of the Senate of our party about these appointments. I wish you would keep this in mind and understand that if there is any other action it would be an oversight. There may be some cases where you will not be able to agree with me, but I want to let you know that I desire the suggestions of all those who are supporting and working with our party, and also to consult others that I might think would be helpful." Marked personal at top and signed, "Calvin Coolidge".

President Coolidge had only been in office four months when he sent this letter to Selden Spencer. He had become president upon the sudden and unexpected death of Warren G. Harding. Spencer had likely raised questions as many of Harding's appointees were resigning as a result of the Teapot Dome Scandal. The very day after writing this letter, Coolidge would address the full Congress in support of many of Harding's policies.

Condition: Evenly toned with a large presidential signature. Spots of adhesive residue on verso. Near fine, save a bit of rust at top left from a paper clip.
