Description
Calvin Coolidge Letter as President: a Genealogy of Himself - Marked "Personal Not for Publication"! Typed Letter Signed, as President, bearing an autograph annotation at top "Personal not for publication", 1 page, on the embossed letterhead of The White House, Washington, March 24, 1927. To Mrs. Florette A. Coolidge in Rochester, New York. In Fine condition, albeit with a faintly penciled note re provenance at bottom. Silent Cal speaks, but not for the record, about his ancestry. In part: "I know that there was an Obadiah Coolidge in the census of Plymouth, Vermont, which was taken in 1790, wherein he was reported to have several children. I never knew what became of him. He was not a brother of my great-grandfather, but was probably a brother of his father. My great-grandfather was Calvin and his father was John. John came from Lancaster, Massachusetts, where there is a record of his marriage but we have never found any record of his birth, though we suppose he was the son of Josiah Coolidge who was a son of Obadiah Coolidge. Perhaps you know where Obadiah went from Plymouth and in what part of New York he settled. Of course I would like to see the photograph to which you refer." From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.Auction Info
