Calvin Coolidge Autograph Signed Letter as President. One-page with blank integral on White House letterhead; 7" x 8.75"; October 17, 1927. A letter to Colonel Samuel H. Church, Pittsburgh, forwarding a memo: "Enclosed is memo from Judge Shaw of my home town which you may file for your records. They are very much pleased that you were willing to have this done..."

It is not clear what President Coolidge sent to Samuel Harding Church (1858-1943), a prominent Pittsburgh Republican, businessman, and literary figure. Church served as vice president of Union Steel Company and a president of the Carnegie Institute. He published several books, most notably a biography of Oliver Cromwell and a history of Pittsburgh. It's possible that Church was collecting information on Coolidge and or his home town in Vermont. Judge Shaw referred to by Coolidge has not been identified. Handwritten letters by Coolidge as President are uncommon.

The letter is accompanied by an 8" x 10" Bachrach photograph of Coolidge.

Condition: The letter has one horizontal fold, with two small pieces of tape on the back side of the top edge. Slight mat burn from previous framing. The letter and photograph are in good condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
