One William A. White typed letter signed consists of two pages, 8.5" x 11", July 17, 1935, Emporia, Kansas, on The Emporia Gazette newspaper imprinted letterhead. Written to James Haley, former Secret Service agent, William A. White, a newspaper editor and politician inquired about the "Black Hills" incident of the summer of 1927. The (at the time) unmarried Haley had been assigned to protect Mrs. Coolidge on a walk in the woods around their Black Hills vacation home, and the pair had gotten lost, returning hours late for a lunch date with the President. Coolidge was likely more worried than suspicious, but it did not help that Haley was an unmarried man at the time. The President believed that his wife's well-being had been put in danger, and Haley was promptly removed from Grace's security detail. The details of this letter were likely for White's book, A Puritan in Babylon: The Story of Calvin Coolidge (1938).

Condition: The 4" x 2.5" reciprocal cards have light soiling. The photograph of the First Family leaving morning service of First Congregational Church on Christmas morning has toning with edge creases. The William A. White typed letter signed has some flattened folds.
