    Benjamin Harrison Autograph Letter Signed "Benj Harrison." Two pages of a bifolium, 4.75" x 7.75", Indianapolis; September 17, 1894. Written on mourning stationery, the letter is addressed to his daughter-in-law, May Harrison. In part: "I got home on the 12th from Elkins - leaving Mame and the children there... Mame's plans were unsettled and I do not know whether she will come out here or go to New York from Elkins. I am very sorry that Mailtuma [?] does not improve more rapidly and have thought that with the whole house here at her disposal & the yard & the Donkey she might find the change beneficial. It will be better that the hotel at Terre Haute for quiet and is so near Terre Haute that you could see Russell after. I will be glad to see you at any time. Josie is doing very nicely as housekeeper... Benj Harrison." Accompanied by the original transmittal cover addressed to Mrs. R. B. Harrison.

    Harrison's wife Caroline had died in 1892, while Harrison was in office. A few years after the date of this letter, Harrison married his deceased wife's first niece, and his children's first cousin. Neither of his adult children attended the wedding, and remained estranged from their father.

    Condition: Light soiling with bold ink. Earlier dealer's pricing and identification at top of first page. Transmittal cover has been torn open, with bits of paper loss at bottom and on verso.
