Andrew Johnson Military Appointment Signed. One partially-printed vellum page, 15.75" x 19.5", Washington, May 1, 1865, appointing "Nathan A.M. Dudley . . . Brigadier General by Brevet" just two weeks after the death of President Lincoln. Countersigned by Edwin Stanton as secretary of war. Folds. Spots of light staining are seen at the edges in places. Small pinholes at all four corners.

Nathan Augustus Monroe Dudley (1825-1910) enlisted in the U.S. Army as a captain in the U.S. 10th Infantry on May 7, 1861. In February 1862, he was commissioned as colonel in the 30th Massachusetts Infantry, serving with his regiment in Louisiana and around Vicksburg. In late 1864, he was commissioned a major in the U.S. 15th Infantry. After the war, he was sent out west and served in the U.S. Cavalry, most notably commanding Fort Stanton in New Mexico Territory during the Lincoln County War. At the Battle of Lincoln (1878), Lt. Col. Dudley arrived with a detachment of troopers. During the night, the house of Alexander McSween, where the opposing Regulators (including the outlaw, Billy the Kid) were holed up, was set ablaze. McSween and several Regulators were killed while fleeing the building. Dudley was later charged with arson for the fire, but was acquitted. From the Collection of a Minnesota Gentleman.
