Andrew Johnson Letter Signed. One page, 7.75" x 9.5", Washington, March 19, 1866, on executive mansion stationery to "the Adjutant General, U.S. Army" regarding the status of a confined former Confederate senator from Alabama, Clement Clay Jr. Clay had also led Confederate secret agents, even employing John Wilkes Booth shortly before the assassination of President Lincoln. Because of this connection, Clay was arrested and confined at Fort Monroe from 1865 until 1866. In this order, President Johnson gives Clay extra liberty at Fort Monroe, which juts outs where the James River empties into the Chesapeake Bay. Still, Clay was not able to "leave the limits of the said Fort." Clay was released later in 1866. Very light mat-burn around the left and lower edges. Bright, clear text with a bold signature by Johnson.

"Immediately upon the receipt of this order, you will please send to Major General Miles, by telegraph and by mail, instructions to permit Clement C. Clay, Jr. to have the liberty of Fort Monroe [Virginia] daily from sunrise to Sunset, upon his giving his parole of honor, in writing, not to leave the limits of the said Fort, or to make any attempt to escape from custody, or to do or perform any act that may be hostile or detrimental to the interests of the Government of the United States."
