Description

Andrew Johnson Autograph Letter Signed "Andrew Johnson." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, [D.C.]; February 14, 1850. Writing to a Tennessee friend and artisan Blackstone McDaniel, Johnson, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Tennessee's First District and future president of the U.S., offers to help McDaniel to get his son into the U.S. Navy. Johnson writes, "Your letter has been received and for the kind and partial sentiments expressed, accept my thanks. On yesterday I was at the Navy de____t and I find that Tennessee is entitled to the appointment of some midshipmen. How would you like for John to enter the Navy. Qualification. Over 13 and under 17 years of age, read and write, Physically sound. If I was in a situation I would like to have one of mine in the Navy. I thought I would suggest it to you."

Condition: The letter has the usual folds, with some weakening and small holes along the center horizontal fold. Light soiling and toning.
