    Description

Andrew Johnson: A Rare Document Signed on his First Business Day as President, Following Lincoln's Assassination. This is an incomplete, handwritten document dealing with the disposition of a case against one Frederick Bloomer who had been charged with enticing soldiers to desert. On the reverse side is the handwritten order signed by Johnson on April 17, 1865 instructing the secretary of state to affix the Great Seal of the United States, which was accomplished. All of the document is in secretarial hand except Johnson's signature. There is some ink blotting on the signature, as the photograph shows, and one 2" fine separation running from the right edge across the middle of the word "Johnson" (however when this item is displayed flat, it appears as a crease line). Measurements: 10.5" x 8.25".

Lincoln was shot on Friday evening, April 14th, making the 17th the first business day of Johnson's presidency. There must have been a great deal of activity that day as preparations were made for Lincoln's mourning and funeral, as well as pressing matters regarding the War, which was just concluding. It is interesting to see that there was time in the president's schedule that day to deal with such a comparatively unimportant subject.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
