    Andrew Jackson Letters Patent Signed. One partially-printed vellum page, 11.25" x 14.5", Washington, March 8, 1836, acknowledging that "Aretus A Wilder, who has resided in the United States two years, hath alleged that he has invented a new and useful improvement In the open Screw wheel for propelling Steam Canal and other Boats which improvement he states has not been known or used before his application hath made oath that he does verily believe that he is the true inventor or discoverer of the said improvement" and that the U. S. government grants "according to law . . . for the term of fourteen years . . . the full and exclusive right and liberty of making, constructing, using and vending to others . . . the said improvement." Countersigned by John Forsyth as secretary of state and Benjamin F. Butler as U. S. attorney general. Paper Seal of the United States affixed at lower left. Folds. One small area of staining in the middle of the upper edge.

    This patent is found in the U. S. patent records and is assigned the number 9,485X. According to the Directory of American Tool and Machinery Patents: "Most of the patents prior to 1836 were lost in the Dec. 1836 fire. Only about 2,000 of the almost 10,000 documents were recovered. Little is known about this patent. Only the patent drawing is available. This patent is in the database for reference only." With a one page explanation of the technical workings of Wilder's screw wheel. Attached with pink ribbon to the above letters patent, the page shows areas of moderate to heavy foxing.
