Description

Andrew Jackson Autograph Endorsement Signed with Initials. Twenty-three lines penned on the verso of a letter to Jackson issued from the Senate Chamber on July 10, 1832. The page measures 8" x 10". Jackson writes, "The petition of Lewis Hutchings and the papers accompanying it has been duly considered and the conclusion arrived at, that the prayer of the petitioner cannot be granted. The fine has been imposed for smuggling, as the petitioner appears to be resolvent, the only punishment is by imprisonment. The only preventative to prevent other desolute poor from being employed in this odious traffic is a certainty of punishment for such offences. Let the place of insolvency once liberate the smuggler, and it would operate as an encouragement for a repetition of this crime. A.J."

Condition: Heavy wear along the folds, including two small tears affecting two words of Jackson's writing. A previous collector has written Jackson's name beneath the endorsement. Ink stain at top on front, with a rough margin along the left side.
