Andrew Jackson Autograph Document Twice Signed. One page, 7.5" x 12.75", Fort Strather, December 27, 1813. Addressed to Major General Cocke: "Again I must remind you of the necessity of having the fifteen hundred men required by the order of the governor in the field at the shortest possible day and of having the supplies of [illegible] staff furnished with the utmost dispatch according to the directions which have been given you. The situation of our affairs at present render it indispensable that the utmost diligence should be used... Andrew Jackson / Major Gnl C.V.T."

Jackson add a postscript and closes with a second signature: "P.S. Agreeably to the wish of Maj. Genl. Pinckney I have nominated Maj. John Baxter as Ap. Dep. Quarter Master who is the bearer of this and is dispatched to Ft. Armstrong & Rep. to attend to the forwarding of supplies. A. Jackson / Major Genl."

Following the Creek Indian uprising in which 250 whites were massacred at Fort Mims in what is (now Alabama), Major General Jackson led 2,500 Tennessee volunteers against the Creeks in October 1813. At Talladega in November, he defeated a force of 1,000 Indians, killing 300. The victories on the battlefield were dampened after disputes arose in December over volunteers' contracts. Jackson's soldiers claimed their enlistments ended December 10, and a "mutiny" of sorts occurred. Major General Cocke's volunteers were brought in to restore the ranks, but these men's contracts were also soon to expire. Many advised Jackson to abandon the Creek War due to his depleted numbers, but he refused to give up. Matted and framed with a portrait of Andrew Jackson to the overall size of 22.25" x 20.25".

Condition: Toned along vertical mail folds. Very small amounts of paper loss along left vertical edge. Small amounts of soiling and dampstaining, affects only a small amount of text at the end of the letter.
