    Description

Abraham Lincoln: Very Scarce Signed Civil War Naval Commission. Since the Navy was a tiny fraction of the Army's size, it is not surprising that these are much rarer. One Rufus Spalding is appointed a paymaster in 1861, signed by Lincoln and also Gideon Welles as Secretary of the Navy. Lincoln's pen skipped a little as he wrote, resulting in a slight unevenness to the signature, and the "Lin..." is bright but clear, as written. The condition of the signature is otherwise virtually pristine, as is the document itself, slight smudging of the ink on the "..on" in Lincoln as well, but neither this nor the aforementioned uneven pen pressure detract too significantly from the overall presence. 14.5" x 17.5", magnificently custom framed with a vintage portrait print. Whole frame measures 21" x 40.5".
