Abraham Lincoln Unsigned Autograph Document. Vermilion Co., Ill., 18 October 1842, one-half page, folio. An affidavit in John M. Wilson vs Samuel Frazier, Jr. (whose name Lincoln spells as "Frazer"), signed by the latter, in which he states his belief that neither the plaintiff nor his security for costs, James McGee, are able "to pay the costs of this suit" and that he "is informed and believes, that executions against the property of each of them have been returned...'No property found' and that...the officers of this court, and witnesses, will be endangered in respect of their legal demands unless said plaintiff be ruled to give additional security for costs." Lincoln and J. J. Brown represented Frazier, the county sheriff, in this suit, which was briefly dismissed in October 1842 when Lincoln made the odd gaffe of claiming that the plaintiff had died. The suit was reinstated the next day when the error was discovered, but Lincoln thereupon moved that the plaintiff be required to give additional security, as shown in this document. Light aging and small marginal chips (one touching a word); folds very soiled on verso; some fold and marginal repairs on verso. This document is dated barely two weeks before Lincoln's wedding to Mary Todd. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
