    Description

Abraham Lincoln: Signed Ship's Paper or Passport in Superb Condition. Partly-printed and manuscript document, 11.25" x 15", being a "passport" or safe passage for the ship "Champion", out of Edgartown, Massachusetts, commanded by Thomas C. Worth. Signed by "Abraham Lincoln" as President and "William H. Seward" as Secretary of State. Interestingly, the document was issued on August 7, 1865, after Lincoln's death, using blank copies that the President had pre-signed. Complete with a sawtooth paper seal of the Department of State and an embossed seal, top left, of the Custom House District of Edgartown. Normal folds. The signatures are exceptional, especially the one of Lincoln which simply cannot be improved upon. The overall impression is outstanding. This format with illustrations of a schooner and lighthouse and much rarer and more desirable than the standard four-language ship's papers.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
