Description

Abraham Lincoln Signed Military Appointment. One partially printed page on vellum, 13.5" x 16.5" (sight), Washington, [D.C.]; August 14, 1861. Appointment of Normal Hall as First Lieutenant in the Fifth Regiment of Artillery in the Union Army. Signed, "Abraham Lincoln" and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. With military and patriotic vignettes. Matted and framed with a photograph of Lincoln and an informational plaque to the overall size of 36.5" x 36.25".

Lincoln signed this document during a critical early period of the Civil War. Only four months into battle, both Union and Confederate leaders focused on strengthening their forces. In addition to Hall's appointment, Lincoln enacted several measures to bolster the Union Army. First, on August 2, the President increased the pay of a private from $11.00 to $13.00 to entice more volunteers. Second, on August 20, only six days after Lincoln issued this certificate, he appointed General George McClellan as commander of the Union Army of the Potomac. Although McClellan brought much-needed organization to Northern forces, he remains a controversial figure in history due to his lack of decisive action on the battlefield. At the same time, the Confederate Congress made its own moves, appointing five brigadier generals, including Robert E. Lee.

Condition: Not examined outside of frame. Creases along folds. Light toning along edges and stain on upper left margin. Archival notations in upper left corner verso. Seal intact.
