Abraham Lincoln Signed Military Appointment For a Surgeon. One partially-printed page, 15.5" x 19.5", Washington, February 26, 1863, appointing "Samuel D. Turney . . . Assistant Surgeon of Volunteers in the service of the United States." Countersigned by Edwin M. Stanton as secretary of war. With engraved military and patriotic vignettes. Seal of the War Department near the upper left corner.

Dr. Samuel Denny Turney (1824-1878), a native of Ohio, enlisted in the Union Army as a surgeon on May 2, 1861, and was mustered into the 13th Ohio Infantry. He was discharged from the 13th Ohio with this appointment and assumed a role on the U.S. Volunteers Medical Staff. He served for a time as medical director on the staff of Gen. Horatio P. Van Cleve and was breveted lieutenant colonel on October 28, 1865. He mustered out of service less than one week later. He returned home to Ohio and resumed his medical practice, being twice appointed Ohio surgeon-general in 1868 and 1872 and as professor of physiology and pathology at Starling Medical College.

The entire document is affixed to a backing board of similar size and the overall smooth appearance of the appoint makes for an attractive presentation. Upper right corner has come loose from board resulting in buckling. Lightly toned in places

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
