    Abraham Lincoln: Signed Commission and Related Documents. 13.75" x 17.25" engraved parchment document appointing Lewis Merrill a "1st Lieutenant in the 2nd Regiment of Dragoons", Washington, D.C., August 28, 1861, signed by "Abraham Lincoln" as President and "Simon Cameron" as Secretary of War. Green sawtooth paper seal. Some fading to the ink inscription and signatures, although the Lincoln autograph remains totally legible and clear. Sold together with four documents related to the military career of Merrill (1834-1896). Merrill is best known for his engagement against guerillas in Missouri, northern Georgia and Alabama. He also had some success in breaking up illegal Klan activities in South Carolina in the 1871-1873 period. The archive includes a large 1891 Pennsylvania "testimonial" document, a 1911 passport issued to his widow, an 1891 passport issued to Merrill, an 1891 testimonial issued in conjunction with foreign travel signed by Pennsylvania Governor Stuart and an 1863 document accepting Merrill's resignation as Brigadier General of the Missouri militia.
