Description

Abraham Lincoln Revenue Appointment Signed "Abraham Lincoln" as president. One partially printed page, 17.25" x 13.25", Washington, D.C.; July 1, 1863. A document appointing Alvan A. Fengar "First Lieutenant in the Revenue Service of the United States". The document has been countersigned by Treasury Secretary Salmon P. Chase and is matted and framed to the overall size of 26.75" x 23.25".
Embossed seal near the lower left margin. "Abraham Lincoln" is printed in large letters at the top of the document above a patriotic vignette. Revenue appointments are the scarcest of appointments. This is only the second one we have ever handled.

Fengar would eventually be promoted to Captain before his career would end. The Revenue Service was established in 1790 and served the United States Department of Treasury until it was merged with the Lifesaving Service to become the United States Coast Guard.

Condition: In very fine condition; the usual folds are present, with light soiling present along the folds. Lincoln's signature is bold and dark.
