    Description

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Pardon Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 10.75" x 17", City of Washington; June 18, 1861. One of only three hundred and forty-three presidential pardons signed by Lincoln. The recipient of the pardon was Benjamin Ogle, who was convicted in the death of a young boy named Webb of Georgetown. He was found guilty of manslaughter in the Criminal Court of the District of Columbia in 1858 and sentenced to eight years in the District of Columbia penitentiary. The pardon describes Ogle as a "most exceptional and hopeful character" and that "this was the first criminal charge ever brought against the said Benjamin Ogle, that he was...in fact rather remarkable for his good humored disposition; and ...it has been represent to me...that the wife and children of said Benjamin Ogle have been brought to great distress by reason of his conviction and imprisonment...and are in extreme need of his care and assistance." The pardon retains the embossed paper seal of the United States and is docketed on verso. Countersigned by Secretary of State William H. Seward.

Condition: 3.5" separation along vertical fold and 5.5" closed tear along horizontal fold which crosses Seward's signature. Gently soiled with some very light foxing.
