    Abraham Lincoln Political Appointment Signed. One partially printed page, 19.75" x 12.75", Washington, September 19, 1863, appointing "...C. C. Sholes, of Wisconsin...Consul of the United States of America, at Singapore..." Countersigned by William H. Seward as secretary of state. Seal of the United States at lower left. Folds are weakening in places causing some separation, most of which has been archivally repaired on the verso. Some chipping along the edges, especially the left. Light toning. Lincoln's signature is bold and very bright.

    Sholes had previously served as mayor of Kenosha, Wisconsin, from 1852 until 1856 and was a two time delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1856 and 1860.
