    Description

    Abraham Lincoln Military Document Signed as president and countersigned by War Secretary Edwin Stanton. One partly-printed vellum page, 15.75" x 19.5", Washington, July 1, 1864, appointing Isaac A. Helm "First Lieutenant in the Third Regiment of Infantry." The document has military vignettes and bears a blue seal in the left margin. The vignettes, text, and presidential signature have slightly faded. The document is toned and foxed with folds.

    Also included is an Andrew Johnson Military Document with a stamped "Andrew Johnson" signature as well as a stamped signature of War Secretary Edwin Stanton. One partly-printed vellum page, 15.75" x 19.5", Washington, September 10, 1866, appointing Isaac A. Helm "Captain by Brevet." The document has military vignettes and bears a blue seal in the left margin. Text, vignettes, and signature are bold. Folds.

    The two appointments are accompanied by over sixteen letters and documents dated between 1858 and 1914, including the following: two Civil War-dated letters from Isaac Helm (signed); one post-Civil War-dated letter (1867); one War Secretary John B. Floyd Printed Letter Signed (1858) to Helm; other Civil War-dated and post-Civil War-dated letters; Civil War-dated documents, including one signed by Edwin Stanton; newspaper articles; and one vellum document ("Lieutenant Commission by James Edward Lord Viscount Fitz Harris, Governor and Captain General of the Isle of Wight") appointing Isaac Arnold a lieutenant (dated September 1807). Isaac Helm died on July 4, 1867. During the Civil War, he received two brevets for honorable actions at the Battles of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
